Ivanka Naneva
Born in 1961 in Bulgaria.
1976/1981 – Studied at the National School of Fine Art in Sofia. Winner of the national drawing
contest.
1981/1987 – Studied at the Higher Institute of Fine Art in Sofia, specializing in graphic art and
engraving. Participated in a national engraving exhibition with a series of lithographs called "Folk
customs and rituals", illustrated books of poetry and launched monthly children's magazine "Stories"
-- modelling and illustrations.
Moves to Portugal in 1992; The Lisbon public first see her work at an exhibition of lithographs, icons
and drawings in nearby Almada.
1996 – Individual exhibition of paintings in the "Imprevisto” gallery, Lisbon.
1997 – Shows engravings and icons at a group exhibition at the “Edmundo Cruz” gallery.
1998 – Individual exhibition of tiles at the “Imprevisto”.
2000 – Individual exhibition of oil paintings entitled "Spiritual" at the "Fala-Só" cultural association in
Lisbon.
Group exhibition at the "Josephus" gallery, Lisbon.
Shows tile panels at “Nativity” group exhibition in Cascais, near Lisbon.
2001 – Individual exhibition of oil paintings at the Cascais Council Gallery.
-- Exhibition to launch the book “Cerâmica e Escultura” (Ceramics and Sculpture) in the
Ribeira Market, Cascais.
-- Individual exhibition of tiles at the “Tertúlia” bar, Lisbon.
2002 – Individual exhibition of tiles at the Cascais Tourist Board Gallery.
2003 – Showed tiles, oil paintings and engravings at the Mãe de Água gallery, Lisbon.
2004 – Individual exhibition of tiles at the “Galeria 55” gallery in Cascais.
2005 – Showed tiles at a group exhibition at the Lapa Gallery, Lisbon.
As of 1996 I have been painting at the Manuel Marques Antunes ceramic workshop in Bicesse,
near Lisbon. I have discovered that hand-painting tiles is the technique that best matches the
nature of my artistic spirit. I have fallen in love with traditional Portuguese ceramic art and do
restoration work and hand-paint panels.
The magical transformation of colour in the kiln, where it becomes brilliant and eternal, inspires me
to work at my art.
